The question has often been asked: “If you could have anything you wanted, what would you ask for?” I am certain that some people would ask for a hefty bank account, a new house or car, or good health; but most people would ask for peace. They desire to have peace in their marriage, family, relationships, and in their world.
Our generation has seen its share of conflict, turmoil, and war. However, such conflicts are not new only to this generation, but have been in existence since the beginning of time. Jealousy, hatred, greed, and a desire for power, often cause men to take by force the possessions and lands of others. Such conflicts even existed before the days in which Christ Jesus walked upon this earth: thus, the very reason for which God sent His Son into the world as the Prince of Peace.
The peace that Christ came to give to us is not only an outward peace, but peace within that produces calm and a sense of contentment. Jesus described it as “…peace which I give to you, and not as the world gives.” The world’s idea of peace is to ‘just get along’ with others; to coexist and live in harmony. Christ’s idea of peace is to be at peace with God; thus, experiencing the peace of God.
All conflict of man, whether it be with others or within ourselves, stems from our sinful nature. Whether we like to admit it or not, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…” (Romans 3:23). Since all of mankind is sinful by nature, he was, and is at enmity with the God. So, God, in His great love for the man He created, sent His Son to establish peace between sinful man and Himself.
It may be difficult to comprehend how a tiny baby could possibly establish peace between God and sinful man; but to do so one must understand that God’s plan for such peace involves a Sacrifice of One who is sinless and perfect; One who alone is worthy to be such a Sacrifice. Can any one of us understand or comprehend the mind of God? No! But that is where faith comes into play. Jesus said, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His Only Begotten Son, that whosoever would believe in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
In sending His Son to be the Supreme Sacrifice to atone for the sins of man, we see that the Babe of Bethlehem became the Christ of Calvary. God gave the greatest gift that anyone could ever hope to receive. He gave His Son, and the gift was born out of His great love for us all. Receiving His gift means that God willingly forgives us of our sin, and establishes peace with Him; thus, allowing us to experience the perfect peace of God in everyday life.
