BULLHEAD CITY — A man convicted in a Bullhead City shooting was sent to prison after his request for a new trial was rejected during his November 19 sentencing hearing in Kingman.

A Mohave County Superior Court jury on October 24 convicted Jack Valenzuela, 41, of two counts of aggravated assault for the January 3 shooting in the 700 block of River Gardens Drive. The jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict on the charge of attempted second degree murder.

The 36-year-old victim from Bullhead City was flown to a Las Vegas hospital for treatment of wounds to his neck, a knee and one of his fingers.

Judge Billy Sipe said both he and the trial jury rejected Valenzuela’s claim of self defense. Sipe said the conclusion is easily derived by repeated views of a video of the shooting.

“He was not posing any sort of threat toward you,” said Sipe who added the gunfire was not justified. “In my opinion this was not even a close call.”

Sipe imposed a 7.5-year prison term.
