Northern Arizona Fire District considers ending IGA with Golden Valley

KINGMAN — The Board of Directors for the Northern Arizona Fire District (NAFD) held a special meeting on Tuesday, July 29, to discuss whether to continue its contract with the Golden Valley Fire District (GVFD). The NAFD presently pays GVFD and its fire chief, David Cunningham, to oversee NAFD through an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA).

After meeting in executive session for nearly two hours, the NAFD Board of Directors declined to make a decision about the IGA. Instead, a motion was made to continue the discussion at another special meeting, which was scheduled for August 12 at 9 a.m.

The Northern Arizona Fire District covers a wide area that begins with Butler in north Kingman and includes the Kingman Airport, the Airport Industrial Park, as well as Valle Vista. If NAFD terminates its contract with GVFD, it will need a new Fire Chief to oversee the district. This may involve promoting an interim Fire Chief from within, recruiting a new Fire Chief, or seeking a new IGA with another neighboring fire district.
