Dear Editor,
Senator Lisa Murkowski has been in the U.S. Senate since 2002, when her father resigned his seat to become governor, and appointed Lisa. After losing the 2010 Republican primary to tea party candidate Joe Miller, she ran as a write-in candidate and won in the general election and was re-elected in 2016 and again I 2022.
The Senate vote for the Budget Reconciliation Bill on July 1 ended in a tie, with Vice President Vance voting yes. Senator Murkowski could have voted to defeat the bill but she voted yes, thus causing the tie. Murkowski had negotiated an exemption for Alaska concerning the bill.
Senator Murkowski is known to be a moderate Republican and voted for President Trump to be impeached after the January 6 insurrection. Trump did not endorse her for the 2022 election and she won anyway. Why she voted for Trump’s bill and caused it to pass is hard to understand. She did not need Trump’s endorsements for her re-election, as has been shown in the past.
Senator Murkowski made it clear she disliked the bill by gaining the exemption for Alaska, but didn’t give a damn about the rest of the country. When asked by a reporter why she did it, her reply was she was a senator from and for Alaska, not for the rest of the country. Because of her horrible decision, she joins the politicians known as Profiles in Cowardice.
