A suicide attempt is reported at Black Mountain Elementary School in Golden Valley. Kingman Unified School District Superintendent Gretchen Dorner said she learned about 11:30 a.m. that a 14-year-old student suffered self harm in one of the school’s restrooms.
Dorner said other students and staff provided care until law enforcement and medical professionals arrived. She said the 7th grade student was transported to Kingman Regional Medical Center and then flown to a Las Vegas hospital for treatment.
There was no initial information available regarding her condition.
Dorner said she is concerned that misinformation on social media is aggravating a sensitive situation. She said she wanted the community to know that posts about school threats, weapon involvement and student danger are incorrect.
The Mohave County Sheriff’s office reinforced Dorner’s message that no other students were harmed or endangered. “The school initiated a voluntary lockdown until the situation was contained, and at no time were any other students in danger,” said agency spokeswoman Anita Mortensen.
Dorner said she was impressed and is proud of how well students and staff handled the emergency. “Our crisis team responded and will continue to be available for anyone seeking guidance or support in coming days,” Dorner said.
