Mohave County Courthouse construction underway

Site preparation is underway where a contractor is building a four story addition to the historic Mohave County Courthouse in downtown Kingman. Heavy equipment is busy tearing up the blacktop of the parking lot where the addition will go vertical.

Fencing has been placed around the work zone that is just north of the Kingman City complex.  County officials have estimated it might cost as much as $24-million to construct the 66,000 sq. ft. addition, remodel the old courthouse, and furnish and equip both facilities.

Presiding Judge Charles Gurtler has said design features for the project will promote security and public safety by creating flows that keep inmates away from the general public. He said a number of legal system efficiencies will also be gained through the new construction and renovation campaign.

The courthouse opened in 1915. Project completion is expected in 18-24 months and quarter cent sales tax revenue is the funding mechanism.
