Boyd selected for BCSD vacancy

BULLHEAD CITY – The Bullhead City School District (BCSD) governing board is recommending long-time resident Anna Boyd to fill a school board vacancy created by the resignation of member Brandee Dubois, who stepped down in July.  Boyd is a math teacher at Mohave High School.

A formal appointment will then be made by Mohave County School Superintendent Mike File.  Under state law, File has the right to accept or reject a board’s recommendation, or unilaterally name his own appointee.

Because a vacancy is being filled, that seat will be up for election next year (2022) rather than at the end of what was Dubois’ full four-year term.

Boyd was one of four applicants for the seat.  The others were former school district principal and administrator Pat Young, who previously sat on the Colorado River Union High School District governing board, Grace Hecht, a former educator and founder of #MakeBullheadBetter, and Teresca Dembik, a Diamondback Elementary School parent.

Boyd attended both BCSD and CRUHSD schools, graduating from Mohave High before attending college.  She also has children in BCSD.

Board members spent more than 50 minutes hearing from the applicants and deliberating, frequently mentioning the caliber of the candidates.  Governing board president Kory Burgess described all as “highly qualified.”

“It’s nice having a tough decision,” said board member Amanda Amann.

School board members are responsible for setting policies and goals, reviewing and approving budgets, and hiring and evaluating the superintendent.  They do not receive a salary for monthly meetings, periodic student disciplinary or personnel hearings, or workshops.

Bullhead City School District traces its history to what’s now known as “The Little Red Schoolhouse,” which opened almost 75 years ago, and now has six schools serving students pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.
