Kingman voters may get the opportunity to decide whether the city mayor should serve for four years rather than two. Kingman council members currently serve four-year terms while the mayor only serves two years.
City Clerk Sydney Muhle recently told council members that the community may enjoy enhanced political stability and continuity with a four-year term format. She said more candidates might run for mayor if they can lock up a four-year term rather than having to expend the money and energy to run every two years.
Muhle said Kingman is one of 42 municipalities in Arizona whose mayors serve two years. She said 49 other cities have four-year terms for mayor.
Muhle said staff will bring a resolution to the council this fall to place the question on the Aug. 4, 2020 primary election ballot. Should voters approve, conversion to a four-year term would occur in 2022.
