The Veteran and the King

letter to the editor

Dear Editor,

At the beginning of the Trump D.O.G.E. uproar, I saw on TV a veteran being pulled out of a town meeting for standing up and calling out a Trump Representative who said, “The President is doing a great job doing exactly what the American people mandated him to do.”

The veteran stood up and yelled out, “No Sir, no one asked Trump to cut veterans’ benefits.” And he was right.

All during Trump’s presidential campaign, he vigorously courted the veterans. Thanking them for their services, hugging the flag, and then saying, “You’re fired.”

Cutting the V.A. Department and V.A. Health programs and benefits and jobs (many jobs held by disabled vets). They were sucker-punched. And this veteran let the Trump representative know it. He said Trump is a lier and can’t be trusted and he is not who he says he is and pretends to be—a patriot that respects and supports veterans.

But then, this is the man who said P.O.W.s aren’t heroes, and soldiers who die in war are suckers and losers. But like Donald Trump always does, he cloaks himself in whatever suits him in the situation.

Much like the fable, “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” or “The Naked King,” he hoodwinked the people into believing he was wearing something he was not. Trump thinks he’s that king or at least wants to be.

Case in point, he posted on X in capital letters: “LONG LIVE THE KING!”

Need I say more?

Like the boy in the story who had the courage to shout out, “The king has no clothes on!”—so did the veteran. He knows our president pulls the wool over our eyes.

He doesn’t care about veterans’ lives and what this does to the morale of our military, thinking they too will get veterans benefits, as promised. All our president cares about is what I see as his royal court that stood behind him at his inauguration.

He made promises to all his billionaire donors at a fancy dinner at Mar-A-Lago when he said, “I’m going to make all of you as rich as hell.”

No doubt it starts with getting rid of government programs and benefits. And in this case, it will be with those who have given themeselves to our country—our veterans.

Sometimes, righteous anger is justified. The Republican Party needs to do what the veteran did. Stand up and speak out and stop kissing the ring and bending the knee to a man who thinks he is “The King.”

J.M.
