The buzzword and the rabbit’s hole

Dear Editor,

President Bush, Jr., was the first to call it for what it is. After Donald J. Trump’s 2017 inaugural speech Bush walked away shaking his head and said, “That was some weird stuff!” He got that right.

Trump’s speech was filled with doom and gloom tearing our country down and disrespecting America’s intelligence like we’ve never heard from any American president. Ever!

He trashed our country repeatedly, calling it a wasteland and an American carnage, and kept saying, “Listen to only me. Only I can fix it.” Like a cult leader would say, or worse a dictator.

For almost a decade from the time he announced he was running for president we’ve had to live with all of his drama and chaos and consequences from his hate rhetoric. But just as troubling as is his past and present crimes and all the weird and bombastic things he says and does is how the Republican party has tolerated it.

At least with Nixon we knew what to do with him and we got through it. And he wasn’t anything like Trump; weird. And it’s gotten even weirder now with J.D. Vance. He who called Trump :America’s Hitler.” But like Donald has always said, “Every man has his price.” And someone found J.D.’s.

Now were getting a double whammy with the weird and crazy; like “eating cats and dogs.” Vance tried to walk it back saying, “I’ll create whatever story I have to to make my point.” Some call that lying. While a town is getting constant bomb threats and schools and hospitals and businesses have to close because of his need to sensationalize a lie to get everyone’s attention is so wrong on a multitude of levels.

In the meantime Trump jumped all over it like white on rice telling a crowd of admirers, “He’s going to Springfield where they’re eating cats and dogs but he might not get out alive!” Like a grenadier saving the day they applauded and cheered.

Donald’s talk is getting weirder by the day, talking about windmills and “bird graveyards” (like he really cares about birds other than the money he gets in his back pocket for saying the things he’s paid to say). Or when he said, “Climate change can be a good thing, it’ll give us more oceanfront property.” (while homes are being swept away around the world leaving millions of lives dislocated) Or when he said, “There’s a big faucet in California dumping water into the ocean drying out the land” but when he’s president again he’ll turn the faucet off and the land will be beautiful and green again!

Or when he recently introduced a Latin pop star on stage and called him a “hot woman.” And the list goes on and on. Is it any wonder the buzzword today is “Weird”?

My father, a lifelong Republican who died during the Reagan era, but got to hear it said loud and clear, “Gorbechev tear down this wall.”

Today we hear, “Putin can do whatever he wants!” Like day and night the Republican Party has turned into something unrecognizable. A party once for women’s rights and Roe vs Wade and emigrating immigrants into our country to power up the workforce.

It would be shocking to my father that a felon represents the Republicans and to boot they admire and praise dictators and autocrats and throw lavish dinner parties for them. (Viktor Orkdon most recent and to no surprise is a good and longtime friend of Putin’s.)

As if no different than the body snatchers something very weird is going on. If my father were still alive he would be asking the questions that many of us are, “Who are you people and what did you do with the Republicans?”

As if they’ve fallen down a rabbit hole into a weird and strange world where like tweedledee and Tweedledum they dress alike in their red caps and T-shirts that say, “I’m voting for a felon” (with Trump’s mug shot). Where they’re up in your face and your personal life like a mad hatter at a ta party turning the table around and upside down speaking out of both sides of the mouth with nonsensical jabber with smoke and mirrors and lies. Where war heroes are not heroes and neo-Nazis are very fine people, and people without children have no value and women bleed out in hospital parking lots because doctors are afraid of being jailed, and women are presumed to be more productive in the kitchen and bedroom than anywhere else.

And caging children solves problems (when all it is is child abuse); or just choose not to do anything because you can’t take credit for it (like Trump did with the border bill). Where some can tell others what books you can and cannot read. And mock women over 50 saying, “They don’t have a foot in the game with reproductive rights.”

(Bernie Moreno, Trump endorsed: No matter what age or gender it’s everyone’s right!) Mark Robinson another Trump endorsed with similar baggage with women as Donald said, “Women shouldn’t have abortion rights because it’s their own fault they can’t keep their skits down.”

Setting aside rape, incest, and pregnancies gone wrong it takes two to tango as the old saying goes so it begs the questions then who is Viagra easily available but not the morning after pill? It’s a conundrum.

As it is with men like Elon Musk and Trump who have everything money can buy, including women, yet, simultaneously harass Taylor Swift. Donald like a rejected adolescent tweets in capital letters with exclamations, “I hate Taylor Swift! (How presidential) And Elon tweets he wants to have a baby with her! First of all that’s just creepy and second she has a significant other and third, only in your dreams, he is out of her league and weird! But then those who do well in the rabbit hole don’t think like the rest of us. Like loose gun laws have priority over the lives of children and teachers or why would J.D. Vance say, “School shootings are a fact of life.” (They weren’t when my kids were growing up)

How stupid does Trump think we are? He’s adjudicated sex offender and killed Roe v Wade. And his threats of imprisoning his opponents and their donors and anyone else who opposes him.

J.M.
