We hear so many numbers that we forget how large single digits can be —especially when followed by a percent sign. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has left the 2024 presidential race, but his polling numbers could still cause havoc on Election Day. Those votes could be channeled to Donald Trump. If you weren’t voting for Kennedy anyway, his recent “Bear-in-central-park” story might register as nothing more than a chuckle. I could not agree more with Mr. Michael Johnson‘s piece in last week’s Standard more. I too am thankful and have thanked the City Council and have walked the street during the Beale Street rebuild to personally thank all those amazingly hard-working construction people who worked so tirelessly to get our new downtown put together.

I have always been a music fan, especially live music, and I recall a particularly frigid night in January ’82 when friends and I loaded into cars and headed for the Meadowlands to see The Kinks (a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame “British invasion” band). To escape the cold parking lot, we went inside to watch the opening band. Halfway through the set we realized, “This guy isn’t bad.”

Dear Editor,

In 1975, I bought a four-cylinder Chevrolet Monza. In my opinion in was a terrible buy and a lousy car. There was one episode after another of maintenance issues and the four-cylinder engine was just a piece of junk.

I survived that car long enough to trade it in on a Toyota Celica.

At a nameless turn on the trail between El Paso and Tucson lay the carcass of a young woman. Morning light found her the same time Roger did. Eyes wide and nostrils wide with terror, the grey gelding beneath Roger refused to go near the smudge of black clothes. He dismounted the pony and patted the lean neck. Roger could feel the horse still leaning back on its back legs, ready to return at the drop of a hat.
