Solar rooftop will power Havasu splash pad

LAKE HAVASU CITY – Unisource Energy Services will build a shade structure with a solar rooftop component to help power a water feature at a park in Lake Havasu City. The renewable energy credit agreement approved during the Jan. 22 Lake Havasu City Council meeting moves forward an initiative patterned after a similar project in Kingman.

Lake Havasu Parks and Recreation Manager Michael Keene said the rooftop solar generating shade structure will be erected at Mesquite Park. He said units atop the 21 X 16 sq. ft. structure will provide up to 85% of the power needed to operate the nearby splash pad.

Council members also approved a zoning request as they breezed through their regular meeting in roughly 30 minutes. A half-acre parcel at Dover and Lake Havasu Ave. will be rezoned from agriculture to a light industrial, consistent with area acreage in use for storage units.

Council members also heard a status report regarding operation of the Food Bank by the Havasu Community Health Foundation. It was reported that nearly 500 families have signed up for assistance since the Foundation began operating the food bank last Sept.
