KINGMAN – Save Our States (SOS) Executive Director, Trent England addressed a group of 50 people on the importance of saving the Electoral College at regular meeting of the Kingman Republican Women (KRW) last Monday.
England gave a brief history of the Electoral College and discussed the powers that states have to protect it. “The states have been overly submissive to the Federal government without using the powers they have themselves,” England said, “The Electoral College limits the ability to commit election fraud to individual states.” He said that the Electoral College protects middle America from the rule of big cities and keeps states in charge of elections.
The NPV (National Popular Vote) interstate compact is legislation designed to nullify the Electoral College without changing the constitution. If passed by enough states that control 270 electoral votes, those states would control the outcome of presidential elections.
Arizona has not yet approved the NPV Interstate Compact although there is a bill that was introduced. England urged the group to contact their AZ Legislators regarding current NPV legislation in Arizona, SB 1697.
England gave an example of the bipartisan nature of the opposition to NPV by citing Nevada Governor Sisolak (D) who last year vetoed a bill that would have added Nevada to the NPV interstate compact; and add its six Electoral College votes to winner of the national popular vote.
Fifteen states and DC have passed NPV legislation, controlling a total of 196 electoral votes as of February, 2021. It has passed in at least one chamber in nine other states and has been introduced in every state.
He provided the group with the America First website, aflegal.org, that is headed by Stephen Miller, former senior advisor and White House Director of Speechwriting for President Donald Trump.
SOS educates public officials and the public about the genius of the American Founders, the importance of the Electoral College and the dangers of NPV organization. The website is www.saveourstates.com
The electoral college is a complete relic of the slavery maintaining compromises of the first constitution, along with the 3/5 person compromise. Only in the United States, and only for President, is the popular vote, not used for an elected office. This person’s entire premise is faulty. The abolishment of the electoral college is an essential part of real democracy.
You need to do some historical research. Actually, you need to take a real civics course. This country was not founded as a “real democracy” on purpose. The founders made it a Republic for a reason; so everyone would be represented, but a largely populated state like California couldn’t force their idiotic ideas on everyone else. Do you know the pledge of allegiance? “…and to the Republic for which it stands….” So please, take your racist rhetoric some place else.
