Residential fire caused by indoor grilling

BULLHEAD CITY – At approximately 11:30 p.m. on November 25, Bullhead City Fire Department responded to a reported residential structure fire in the 2000 block of Bahama Drive. They found a working fire inside an abandoned structure, with flames venting from a window.

Firefighters quickly assessed the exterior of the building to ensure no occupants were inside before beginning an aggressive fire attack. The fire was quickly contained.

A fire investigator arrived on the scene and determined the fire’s likely cause to be a small barbecue grill with a closed lid and hot coals located near the fire’s point of origin.

The Bullhead City Fire Department urges community members to exercise caution when using barbecue grills. Using grills inside homes or under covered structures poses severe fire risks and health hazards and should never be done. Burning charcoal or wood produces volatile gases, including carbon monoxide, which is toxic and potentially fatal even in small doses. BBQ grilling should only be done outside in a clear, open space ten feet away from any structures.
