PEACH SPRINGS – After a two-year dry spell, Grand Canyon Caverns, one of the largest dry caverns in America is excited to announce the Grand Re-Opening of the Caverns at Route 66, Mile Marker 115. The event will take place on February 1, starting at 10 a.m. with the ribbon cutting followed by presentations from GCC representatives. Then starting with the 1 p.m. tour, a 20% grand opening tour special (promo code 0201PROMO) will be available for the afternoon.
“The community has been waiting for this day!” said Carletta Tilousi, Grand Canyon Caverns Board Chairwoman. “Millions of tourists travel to Northern Arizona each year and venture on the Historic Route 66 creating memories of their own. GCC is a great stop to stretch your legs and tour the caverns and enjoy a burger.”
Under new ownership/management, Grand Canyon Caverns & Inn has made updates throughout the property. Most significantly is the installation of a new elevator that escorts you 21 stories into the earth to witness the beauty and grandeur of these rare dry caverns. GCC is the third largest dry caverns in the world (largest in the USA).
Huge caverns, large enough to hold a football field, display mineral formations, a sloth, mummified bobcat and other great rooms. When Walter Peck discovered the caverns in 1927 falling into the natural entrance, he thought he saw gold. Instead, he profited from tours by lowering tourists into a hole in the ground on a rope (once called “dope on a rope” with a candle).
Cavern entry accelerated with the original elevator installation in 1962, and a new elevator installed in 2024. It descends 210 feet or 64 meters into the Caverns.
“Safety of our guest is top priority when traveling 210 feet below the earth to explore the caverns,” said Scott West, General Manager, Grand Canyon Caverns. “Our focus continues with lighted, paved paths and handrails throughout the caverns.”
Choose your desired experience with a guided tour that departs on the hour and half hour or an exploratory 2-3 hour tour that goes off trail. A deeper dive provides the opportunity to tour the caverns and dine within at the Crystal Restaurant (formerly the Grotto) or maybe you prefer to stay overnight in the Cavern Suite, the deepest, darkest, quietest hotel room in the world!
A restaurant that seats hundreds, parking for bus tours, rally space for over 600 people and soon to return is our gas station with a propane refill station. Accommodations are abundant from Bunkhouses/Ranch House for small groups or large families, RV Park/Tent Camping that provides water, electricity, and onsite dump station, or nostalgic Route 66 Inn that feature queen and king beds.
