MCSO seeks suspect in north Kingman shooting

KINGMAN – The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) seeks help from the public as it conducts follow-up investigation in an attempted murder case in north Kingman. Agency spokeswoman Anita Mortensen said a 62-year-old man was shot the morning of Dec. 19 at a residence in the 2800 block of E. Hearne Ave.

The victim was reportedly transported to Kingman Regional Medical Center before he was transferred to a trauma center. She said investigation identified Zachary Sowers, 25, as a suspect.

“Sowers had reportedly been living with the victim and was being asked to leave when he allegedly shot the victim,” Mortensen said. “Sowers had fled the residence on foot and was located by detectives in an alley way a couple blocks west of the residence.”

Mortensen said Sowers was taken into custody after a short foot pursuit and booked into the Adult Detention Center on an attempted murder charge. She said the MCSO is asking those living near the shooting site to check video surveillance systems to see if Sowers can be spotted wearing a black hoody style sweatshirt.

“Residents living in the area between Benton St. and Van Nuys Rd., and John L Ave. to Leroy Ave., are asked to check their video surveillance for any subjects walking in this area that may match this description on December 19th, 2024, between the hours of 07:39 A.M. and 08:05 A.M.,” Mortensen said. “Additionally, residents are encouraged to thoroughly check their property, outbuildings, and surrounding area for any items that is out of place, specifically firearms.”

Mortensen said it is believed that Sowers disposed of the weapon somewhere in this area.

“If any suspicious items are located, please leave it in place and do not handle it,” she said. “If any suspicious items are located, or if you have any video surveillance of the suspect, please contact the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office at (928)753-2141 and refer to case number 24-047833.”
