Martin Luther King Day should continue to be celebrated

Dear Editor,

A political website noted that January 20, 2025, in addition to being Inauguration Day, is also Martin Luther King’s birthday. The site listed nine ways for Democrats to prepare for a Trump victory on November 5, 2024.

One of the nine suggestions advised; “Prepare for the ultimate insult to racial justice on Inauguration Day, which will take place on January 20, 2025, which is also the federal holiday to commemorate the memory of Martin Luther King Jr. What should be a symbolic marker in the election of the first woman of color could instead be appropriated as a sign of reactionary redemption.”

There won’t be a woman of color president this year. But whomever you supported on November 5, please remember that Martin Luther King’s efforts were meant to benefit everyone, not just Blacks or Democrats. We should continue to celebrate King’s birthday — peacefully — no matter who is in the White House.
