A Kingman man was allegedly combative with staff members who were trying to conduct an initial medical assessment as he arrived for booking into the Mohave County Adult Detention Center last Friday afternoon. Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Anita Mortensen said Gregg Alan Maclaren, 56, yelled at nurses and ignored detention officer commands to cease and desist.
Mortensen said officers had Maclaren place his hands on the wall so they could handcuff him and lead him to a holding cell.
“As officers were doing so, Maclaren grabbed a pen from the desk and lunged toward officers in a stabbing motion with the pen,” Mortensen said. “The officer grabbed the hand holding the pen and Maclaren dropped the object.”
Mortensen said Maclaren used his elbow to strike an officer in the jaw and cheek as he was placed in a cell. She said the officer was not injured.
Kingman police had involvement with Maclaren the previous day. Deputy Police Chief Rusty Cooper said management asked officers for help in evicting Maclaren from a motel on Andy Devine Avenue.
Witnesses told officers that Maclaren had appeared to have been hallucinating. They said he indicated that he entered another room on the property because radio waves from that room were coming through the walls into his room.
Police arrested Maclaren for aggravated assault, disorderly conduct and criminal damage. The county tacked on aggravated assault charges for the jail incident.
