Lake Havasu City in May features a Chihuahua Race, a Striper Derby and new SUP Glow Paddling

Perro pequeño don’t get much cuter than this

As the boating season gears up in Lake Havasu City, a resort community many like to call “Arizona’s West Coast,” May looks like a fun month with a Chihuahua race, a striper fishing derby, and a new attraction in town called glow paddling.

The 11th Annual Cinco de Mayo Chihuahua Races & Social Event will May 5. The Chihuahua is a tiny short-hair with a huge personality and big-dog attitude. You’ve seen them steal the show in Beverly Hills Chihuahua, Legally Blonde, and Sex and the City. Now you can see these fast pocket-sized critters race on a 30-ft. sand track when Paws & Claws Animal Care sponsors a May 5 Cinco de Mayo competition at 2715 Maricopa Ave. The fun starts with registration at 4:30 p.m. Racing begins at 5 p.m. Top prize is $100 for the fastest little perro pequeño.

Then if watching all those swift little paws makes you thirsty, head over to That Dane Bar Bark Park and Brews at 2213 W. Acoma Blvd., Lake Havasu City’s only indoor drinking establishment for dogs and their owners – no matter their size. (www.thatdanebar.com )

Catch big fish, win boat. It’s as easy as that. Or maybe not

The 37th Annual WON Striper Derby will be May 18-19. The London Bridge Resort is headquarters for experienced anglers passionate about landing some of the lake’s legendary stripers. Hosted by Western Outdoor News and Lake Havasu City, the WON Striper Derby features a grand raffle prize of a Klamath 16 EXW 16-ft. fishing boat paired with a Suzuki 40 HP motor and trailer. Organizers say it’s the largest, most lucrative striped bass fishing event in the U.S. Friday is check-in and a Captain’s meeting at Anderson Toyota at 6510 Showplace Ave. to go over event rules and weekend activities for first-time entrants.

Cost per team is $175 which includes basic entry and a chance to win the boat, trophies and many other tackle prizes, including a Striper Derby hat and T-shirts for both team members. There will be docks for the boats weighing in their bags of linesiders and plenty of parking for cars and boat trailers near the London Bridge Resort’s convention center.
