Joan Barkhurst

Joan Barkhurst was born 1933 in Newcastle, Wyoming.  She was the youngest daughter of Daniel and Helen Thomson.  She passed away peacefully at home on August 21st, 2024 in Kingman Arizona.  

One of her greatest joys as a girl was riding bareback on her horse Prince while exploring the mountains around her family’s ranch home. 

She attended nurse’s training at a Catholic Teaching Hospital in North Dakota, received her RN (Registered Nurse) degree and loved this career her entire life.   She was a Trauma Flight Nurse and instrumental in forming the helicopter flight emergency program at Kingman Regional Medical Center.  

She was married to Robert Barkhurst for 64 years, he preceded her in death.  She is survived by her children, Mark Barkhurst, Daniel Barkhurst, Michael Barkhurst, Susan Cook, and Jane Himes.  Her grandchildren Brandon Barkhurst, Steven Barkhurst, Nicole Negrete, Trenton Barkhurst, Clayton Cook, Olivia Smith, Elissa Himes, and Thomson Himes.  Her great grandchildren Riley Barkhurst, Rychard Barkhurst, Kendal Barkhurst, James Barkhurst and Adeline Negrete.

Services for Joan begin Thursday August 29th at 5 PM with public viewing at Sutton Funeral Home. A brief prayer service

will start at 5:15 PM and end at 5:30 PM. Viewing at Sutton ends at 6:30PM. Funeral mass at Saint Mary’s

Catholic Church Friday, August 30 starts at 10:00 AM and ends at 10:45 AM. Burial services at Mountain View Cemetery start at 11:30 and end by 12:30 PM.

Joan was a devoted wife and loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
