Havasu transient sentenced for punching bicyclist

LAKE HAVASU CITY – A Lake Havasu City transient was told he needs to work on his aggressive behavior at his November 26 sentencing hearing in Kingman. Thomas Ward, 56, will be on supervised probation for three years for an aggravated assault conviction achieved through a plea agreement.

Police reports indicate that Ward rose from his seated position on a park bench to attack a bicyclist who was pedaling past his position in the 2100 block of McCulloch Boulevard in the early afternoon of February 1. Ward allegedly hovered over and pummeled the victim with his fists, reaching into the man’s pocket to steal $8 before fleeing.

Prosecutor Jacob Cote told Judge Billy Sipe that Ward committed another assault they day after he was released from jail for the park violence in another case already adjudicated in Justice Court.

Ward has already spent eight months in custody and will serve no further jail time for the first case. Judge Sipe said he did not know how much more time Ward must serve in the second assault case.

Noting a history of convictions for 22 previous misdemeanors and four felonies, judge Sipe expressed some skepticism regarding Ward’s ability to comply with terms of probation.
