Havasu petition intends to decrease power bills

LAKE HAVASU CITY – There is a petition currently going around Lake Havasu City that could lead to lowering utility costs for our residents. Frustrated by the ongoing increases with our community’s utility bills, Lake Havasu resident Nanci Bazzano-Dickey, launched a petition in August of this year to get others involved who were sharing that same discontent.

Bazzano-Dickey was able to obtain 2,000 signatures over the past two months.

Bazzano-Dickey maintains that according to the historical weather charts of the past five years, temperatures have pretty much been the same.

According to Bazzano-Dickey, the people who live in Lake Havasu City year-round continue to have their bills escalating by 30, 40, and sometimes even 50 percent.

Bazzano-Dickey also maintains that solar customers aren’t safe either. The continuous increases also include solar customers. Customers on budget billing are now getting inflation bills skyrocketing to $150, sometimes more, to their set billing fees. Bazzano-Dickey also shared that Unisource and Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC), never warned customers about raising the costs of kilowatts and adding it to surcharges. The petitioner points out that the higher bills don’t just affect family households, but also the seniors of the community who are being faced with some difficult decisions to make.

“Residents are having to choose between paying electric and gas bills or paying for food and housing.  Many seniors and small families are being buried at these rates. Some seniors who have been here for 35 to 40 years with plans to stay for the rest of their retirement, are now considering selling their homes,” Bazzano-Dickey said. Tuesday, August 13 Bazzano-Dickey addressed Havasu City Council members on the matter requesting them to gain signatures from the community at the courthouse.  She also shared that the previous day, was when the initial invite to bring about public awareness to diffuse the increasing electric bills at the library.

Within that first day, Bazzano-Dickey received 500 signatures.  Aside from the online petition that is free to sign, Bazzano-Dickey has attracted a following of locals who have taken the petition signature requests to the streets and businesses of Lake Havasu.

Unisource’s website currently states that utility bills will rise 18% percent by January of 2025.  According to Bazzano-Dickey, the main goal of the petition is to be the voice for those who are unable to speak their opinions.
