CHLORIDE – Green is the color of the day when Chloride celebrates St. Patrick’s Day on Saturday, March 15. Chloride annually honors the Irish miners who worked in the dozens of mines around this 1860’s historic townsite.
This free family-friendly event begins at 9 a.m. with the ever-popular Bake Sale at the corner of Second Street and Elkhart Avenue. Shop early, the delicious goodies go fast! Be sure to load up on raffle tickets too. There are great prizes this year, including gift certificates, hotel stays, crafts, collectibles, and lots of unique gifts. And you don’t have to be present to win!
At 11 a.m. the Silver Sage Vigilantes gunfight troupe will show you how the West was really won in the Historical Society’s Cyanide Springs on Elkhart Avenue.
The always crazy St. Patrick’s parade marches down Tennessee Avenue beginning at “High Noon”. This year’s entries include floats, motorcycles, antique cars, cowboys, Indians, marching units, livestock and much more.
Do you want to be in the parade, but haven’t signed up yet? No problem, stop by the Chloride Town Hall on Payroll Avenue any time between 9:30 and 11 a.m. day of the parade. You will get an entry number and six free raffle tickets.
After the parade, at 1 p.m., the Vigilantes will perform again. After the gunfights explore the Jim Fritz Museum and the Silver Belle Playhouse next door. Both are full of memorabilia from Chloride’s glory days. Be sure to visit the unique shops in the area. Stop by the Las Vegas Gold Prospectors and the Mohave Prospectors Club, where you can pan for real gold.
Parade prizes will be awarded at 2 p.m. at the Town Hall on Payroll Avenue. The awards presentation is followed immediately by the drawing of raffle tickets.
For history buffs, there is a historic jail on Merrimac Avenue, and the train station around the corner. A mile east of Chloride are the world-famous Roy Purcell Murals and petroglyphs left by the Hualapai Indians who lived in the area. Check the road conditions at the Mineshaft Market before heading to the murals.
Shoppers will enjoy the numerous shops around town offering a variety of antiques, collectibles, and hand-made crafts. When hunger strikes stop by Yesterdays Restaurant on 2nd Street or visit the VFW. They will be serving food and drink after 1 p.m. You may choose to visit the food and craft vendors all around town.
