Dear Editor,
In 1981, President Ronald Reagan began the destruction of the labor unions in this country. Air traffic controllers were demanding increased wages, better working conditions and health care for themselves and their families. More than 11,000 of them were fired, and Republicans were able to cripple the labor unions in America. The downward spiral of stagnated wages and benefits has taken place ever since.
Now the top one percent own forty percent of this country’s wealth. The Trump administration gives tax cuts to the wealthy and corporations, while the country’s national debt increases to thirty-eight trillion dollars (a trillion is a thousand billion). With a debt this large, cutting taxes seems foolhardy. Percentage wise, corporations and the wealthy pay much less in taxes than the average American. The dangers threatening our society come from this unequal distribution of wealth. The ignorance, vice, lawlessness and flip-flopping enabled by economic inequality shows itself in the stupidity and corruption of the Trump administration. In a society where many are plagued by fear of barely surviving from paycheck to paycheck, assuring that the wealthy pay their fair share could benefit ordinary Americans. We should view those who acquire more than they need as useless as a hamster on a wheel.
They want us to believe that AI will improve our lives, but will it just allow the wealthy to have more and more of what they don’t need while destroying the environment along the way? The slaves of the past knew they were slaves, but we seem not to know that all of us are slaves.
