Disregarding expert opinion is folly

Stupidity, hug? I wonder if the writer of the letter calling those of us who choose to wear masks and practice social distancing to protect ourselves and other from COVID-19 would, in his infinite wisdom, allow a surgeon to perform surgery on him without anyone in the O.R. wearing a mask? If has been well over a century ago the medical profession began postulating wearing gloves, masks, and using sterile equipment in a sterile environment, reduced nosocomial infections in post-op patients.

Granted, there is now a fringe group questioning the veracity of such procedures. Just as there are those who refuse to allow vaccinations against disease. I do not know how the explain the eradication of smallpox in the world! These are the very people who will quickly forget their heartfelt beliefs and have the unmitigated gall to expect doctors and nurses to put their lives at risk to take care of them when they succumb to illness.

A difference of opinion is one thing. Disregarding expert opinion probably is folly, which also brings to mind the writer who disparaged the young teen spearheading a Black Lives Matter rally downtown. I hope the young lady continues to act on her convictions. People will not always agree, but as someone once said, “Opinions are like certain body party, everybody has one!”

  1. You are comparing apples and oranges. The protective equipment they wear in an operating room is to prevent the spread of germs, same goes for sterilizing. These practices are not used to prevent viral exposure. Masks and vaccines have nothing in common. The real point is this virus has been in the US for almost 6 months. We wore masks, practiced social distancing and stayed home at the onset to prevent overwhelming our medical facilities. That worked as no facilities were taxed. We are now beyond that. This virus will NEVER go away, so how long are you planning to wear a mask? Masks don’t protect healthy people because this is not the only way to be exposed. EVERYONE will be exposed to this virus, just like they are to all other viruses in existent. Even the “experts” don’t agree that masks will protect you. Most of them are talking about the psychological benefits. Mandates are becoming an overreach of the government, there is no longer an emergency.
