Davis takes plea in Body Beach shooting

Interior of courtroom

LAKE HAVASU CITY – A shooting last Halloween at Body Beach in Lake Havasu City will end in a prison term for the perpetrator. Tony Davis, 21, pleaded guilty to a reduced aggravated assault charge during his January 5 change of plea hearing in Kingman.

Several dozen people had gathered at the beach before the violence last October 31.

Deputy Mohave County Attorney Amanda Claerhout said Davis approached the victim from behind before opening fire, wounding the man in an ankle and leg. The man was transported by family and treated at Havasu Regional Medical Center.

His lawyer Scott Ruffner said Davis’ position is that he acted in defense of others, but he told the court it would be a flawed defense if argued at trial.

Mohave County Superior Court Judge Lee Jantzen has broad discretion at a February 3 sentencing hearing. Davis could get as little as two years and up to 8.75 years in prison.
