Council discusses island repaving, wash improvements

LAKE HAVASU CITY – A ceremony to recognize volunteer public safety service was held at the Oct 10 Lake Havasu City Council meeting.

Sgt. Lorne Jackson and Ofcr. Josh Banuelos both received awards for their bravery during a confrontation with an opponent.  Police department volunteers were also recognized for their unselfish time and dedication in protecting our community. Knudson announced the badge pinning ceremony that took place last week for promotions given to members of the fire department.  

Knudson also discussed last week’s coffee with the mayor, where May Sheehy presented a proclamation for Lake Havasu to declare November as Alzheimer’s Awareness Month.  The city manager shared that the Parks and Recreations is still accepting applications for this month’s youth talent show until October 20.

The talent show is scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 26 at 6 p.m. Parks and Recreation will also be bringing Lake Havasu’s Parks and Recs Fall Fun Fair set to take place on Saturday, October 28 from 3 to 8 p.m. at Rotary Park. The fair will have booths, food, and games for the public to enjoy.

Knudson concluded his announcements by reporting the mayor’s visit last week to the Riverstone Sustainability Coalition. This was a quarterly meeting to keep the town up to date and to support all concerns and topics related to the lower Colorado River.  

Project Manager Jason Hart presented the Water Replacement project motion to repair pipes for 2024.  This agreement will be with Trico Engineering.  This motion was passed by the board in the amount of $135,120. 

Jarod Thiele of Project Pavex Corporation requested weather monitoring equipment upgrade. The project to Pavex Corporation was awarded in the amount of $211,030.  Project Manager Mike Wolf announced a request by Pioneer Earthmovers Inc for funds towards their Island Re-Pave Project. 

The project will include a new asphalt pathway, new signage, and stripping along with driveway improvements.  $1,572,862 was awarded to Pioneer Eartmovers by the board. Wolf also presented wash crossing improvements to be completed by Pecro Rock Company.  

The project will benefit pedestrians and vehicles for safe sight distances.  This will take place at El Dorado Avenue and Dolphin Dr. This bid was also awarded by the board in the amount of $1,988,760. 

Phil Porter of Felix Construction, requested a bid for the existing lift station which is near the Aquatic Center.  The lift station is almost thirty years old.  Construction is set to take place in November of 2023.  Board approved the bid to Felix Construction Company in the amount of $1,249,500.  

This week’s meeting was concluded with Bill Young of Holbrook Asphalt  Company who addressed council members for a bid to repair the cracked roadways with their Crack Seal Program. The program is intended to prevent water leaks that may enter them.  The motion was passed for the fiscal year from 2023 to 2024 to Holbrook Asphalt Company for $749,116.
