Drug bust on Interstate 40

Large quantities of an assortment of drugs were seized following a Monday traffic stop on Interstate 40 in Kingman. Mohave County Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Anita Mortensen said an ADOT Enforcement Division K9 responded to the scene to assist deputies. “The K9 alerted to the presence of the odor of narcotics inside the vehicle,” Mortensen said. She said a thorough search of the vehicle produced the confiscation of 9.8 pounds of cocaine, 2.5 pounds of heroin and 1.3 pounds of packaged counterfeit oxycodone pills suspected of containing fentanyl. MCC budget prioritizes student instruction, student support and infrastructure in 2020

The Mohave Community College Governing Board will meet on June 13 to vote on the 2019-2020 fiscal year budget. “The budget is balanced, with zero debt, and the vast majority will continue to be dedicated to instruction and student support,” said Interim MCC President Dr. Diana Stithem. The $45 million budget includes $34 million in direct support of classroom instruction, student support and local scholarships.  The college is looking at many classroom investments, including a $400,000 expansion of collaborative technology college-wide.  This would allow the college to offer more real-time interactive video classes, which benefit students who learn much better…

Richer to speak at Republic luncheon

The Conservative Republican Club of Kingman will host guest speaker Stephen Richer of Phoenix on Monday, June 10 beginning at noon at the Dambar Steakhouse, 1960 E. Andy Devine. Richer is heading the Arizona Voting Integrity Project (the Republican Party project to combat voter fraud), and he is also going to be the opposition to Adrien Fontes, the Maricopa County Recorder. Child drowning under investigation

A two year-old girl pulled from a residential swimming pool north of Lake Havasu City last Friday died two days later. The apparent drowning incident remains under investigation by the Mohave County Sheriff’s office. Agency spokeswoman Anita Mortensen identified the victim as Harley Netter. She said deputies responded to the 3000 block of Jennie Lane in Desert Hills where family members had pulled Netter from the pool after discovering her face down in the water. Netter was transported to Havasu Regional Medical Center and then flown to the Phoenix Children’s Hospital in extremely critical condition. She was pronounced dead at 10:25…

Look before you lock – help prevent pediatric vehicular heatstroke

Since 1998, The Department of Meteorology and Climate Science at San Jose State University have reported that there have been 804 pediatric vehicular heatstroke deaths in the United States, where more than half of the deaths are children under two years of age. In 2019, there have been a total of nine deaths reported, with two deaths reported in Arizona.
