Bullhead Fire Department urges firework safety ahead of Fourth of July holiday

BULLHEAD CITY — As fire dangers reach high alert, the Bullhead Fire Department would like to share these important safety messages before the Fourth of July holiday. Residents are encouraged to leave fireworks to the professionals this year and celebrate Independence Day by watching the annual Rockets Over the River fireworks display.
However, if you do choose to celebrate the holiday by using permissible fireworks, we urge you to follow these simple safety tips:

  1. Supervise Children: Never allow children to hold or light fireworks.
  2. Handle Malfunctions Carefully: Do not try to pick up or relight a malfunctioning firework. Doing so could result in severe burns and injuries.
  3. Maintain Safe Distances: Keep at least 20 feet between fireworks and people, structures, or cars. Avoid lighting fireworks near dry brush.
  4. Use a Long BBQ Lighter: The longer lighter allows more distance between a hand and the ignition point of a firework.
  5. Have a Water Source Nearby: Always keep a hose or bucket of water nearby to help put out fireworks easily.
    City Ordinance Reminder:
Per Bullhead City Ordinance, the use, discharge, or ignition (collectively “use”) of permissible consumer fireworks is prohibited except for the following dates:
  • May 4 through May 6
  • June 24 through July 6
  • December 24 through January 3
On allowable days, hours of use are limited to 8:01 a.m. to 10:59 p.m. Hours of use are expanded from 11:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. on December 31 through January 1 and July 4 through July 5, respectively.
Notwithstanding the preceding, the use, discharge, or ignition of permissible consumer fireworks is prohibited at all times in the city’s Colorado River Nature Center.
Stay safe, be firewise and have a Happy Fourth of July!
