Dr. Carolyn Stewart will be the next superintendent of the Bullhead City Elementary School District. Stewart retired from the district in 2015 after 26 years as an elementary and junior high school principal. The 4-0 vote Wednesday night is contingent upon Stewart’s renewal of her Arizona educational certifications. An elderly, legally blind man who sports a white beard, wears Santa Claus attire and shuffles around the city of Kingman appearing hopelessly homeless was honored during Tuesday’s city council meeting. Mayor Jen Miles presented James Zyla, also known as “Santa James”, with a key to the city and the community’s first Unity Award. Terms of a plea agreement entered Thursday will send to prison the Kingman woman who stole money from the WAVE-JTED school district while formerly working as its business manager. Deborah Long, 45, pleaded guilty to fraud and theft for stealing money from the district serving western Arizona schools from Parker to Kingman. Mary Harris, a prosecutor with the Arizona Attorney General’s office, told the Court that Long abused her position to use warrants to write checks to herself, embezzling almost $140,000 between May, 2011 and August, 2016. The City of Kingman and a financial consultant are working to add a new option that could someday be used to help finance the Rancho Santa Fe interchange project. Mark Reader addressed city council members for 50 minutes Tuesday, explaining that Community Facilities Districts (CFD’s) can be formed to issue bonds to fund public infrastructure projects. A former detention officer has pleaded guilty to bringing contraband into the Adult Detention Center where she worked for the Mohave County sheriff’s office in Kingman. Ashley Desiree Aquino, 24, Bullhead City, was arrested last November when accused of bringing heroin and other contraband into the jail. Through a plea agreement entered Monday, Aquino will be convicted of one count of promoting prison contraband. Prosecutor James Schoppmann told the Court that Aquino smuggled tobacco into the jail, providing it to her inmate boyfriend Ryan Valente Acosta, 29, Bullhead City, and inmate Matthew Solari, 31, Needles. Stockton Hill construction continues

Crews have been working on the culvert crossing and miscellaneous concrete work throughout the project. Crews plan to patch the west side of Stockton Hill Road this Friday, April 19. Next week, they will be working on curb and sidewalk replacements at the culvert crossing. As they complete this work, small areas of traffic control will be set up around the work zones. The culvert work should be done next week. The waterline project is waiting for regulatory approvals from the state.
