MOHAVE COUNTY – Mohave College will host a three-part speaker series at its Lake Havasu City Campus, offering community members an opportunity to learn about significant historical, cultural and environmental topics that have shaped the American southwest.
The free lecture series, “Stories of the Southwest: A Community Lecture Series,” opens Oct. 14 with “Poston Live: Remembering the Poston Internment Camp,” presented by Marlene Shigekawa, president of the Poston Community Alliance and a former internee at the Poston War Relocation Center. Shigekawa will share firsthand insights into the history of Poston, one of the largest Japanese American incarceration camps during World War II. The evening will also feature a screening of the short film Blue Jay and an audience question-and-answer session.
In recognition of Native American Heritage Month, the series continues Nov. 9 with “Growing in the Desert: The History & Culture of the Tohono O’odham.” Presented by Dr. Jacelle Ramon-Saubera of Tohono O’odham Community College, the lecture will explore the history, traditions, resilience and contemporary culture of the Tohono O’odham people through the perspective of a member of the Nation.
The final presentation, “All Things Water: A Regional Perspective,” is Nov. 18 and presented by Dr. Doyle Wilson. The lecture will examine the challenges and opportunities surrounding water in the Southwest, including regional water resources, conservation efforts and long-term sustainability. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of one of the region’s most critical issues and its impact on the future of the southwest.
The event is free and open to the public. Doors open at 5 PM with the lecture starting at 5:30 PM, at Mohave College Lake Havasu City Campus, 1977 Acoma W Blvd., building 600. Light refreshments will be served.
