I admitted- I’m hooked on Pinterest. In case you are unfamiliar with Pinterest, it is a website devoted to the crafter, amateur chef, and do-it- yourselfer.
If you want to cook up some delectable dishes, or make something extraordinary, Pinterest is the place to find detailed instructions. One thing that amazes me is the many things you can do with a Glowstick™. They can be used to enhance party decorations, ice sculptures, and even balloons.
Recently, when seeing these sticks of light displayed in the store, it dawned on me that they are dormant and dark while in the package. For a glowstick to be effective and emit light, it must first be broken.
How much so are we like a Glowstick™! Jesus said: “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do they light a lamp and hide it under a basket, but set it on a lampstand, and it gives light to all that are in the house.” (John 4:14-15)
As lights in the world, we are simply a reflection of the True Light, Jesus Christ. Our reflection of Christ is a testimony of who we are, and whose we are; for we are the Lord Christ’s.
How can I be a light in a world of darkness? What kind of testimony or image can I project? Well, for starters, I can walk and love toward all men as Jesus did. But, in order to shine in darkness that others might see, I must first be broken.
Breaking of human will suggests that I put others interest above my own. There is so much selfishness, prejudice, animosity and bitterness between people of the different races, creeds, and colors, as well as the different economic and social classes.
How much better this world would be if all people accepted others as we were created – equal, and in the image of God.
If love towards others is a manifestation of reflected light, then we must heed the words of Jesus, who said: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” (John 4:16)
Light bearing and good works are not that others might see me and brag on my accomplishments; they are simple, random acts of kindness as I allow God to work through me to touch another person.
The next time you see a Glowstick™, think of its effectiveness, and how you can emit light also as a follower of Christ who allows God to work through you on behalf of others.
