Cause of Gemstone fire unknown

KINGMAN – Dozens of ground crew firefighting personnel and engine equipment are battling the Gemstone wildfire sparked last Thursday night, July 11, about five miles east of Kingman between the Rancho Santa Fe subdivision and the Hualapai Mountains. The Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management reported Friday that the blaze estimated at 177-acres was still threatening about 150 structures.

No evacuations were ordered. The agency reported that some power lines burned, which may explain why more than a dozen area radio stations were off the air until about 7:45 a.m.

Cause of the fire has not been established.
