Ramos scolded, sentenced to five years

Jonah Ramos

Mohave County Superior Court Judge Rick Lambert scolded a Bullhead City man for beating the mother of their child while injuring the four-month-old boy in the process last fall. Lambert, during a recent sentencing hearing in Kingman, told 47-year-old Jonah Ramos his criminal history is replete with violent behavior.

“I don’t know what you’re so angry about, but you’re obviously a very angry man,” Lambert said. He imposed a five year prison sentence and encouraged Ramos to sort through and resolve his anger issues while behind bars.

Ramos pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and child abuse by domestic violence involving the December, 2018 incident at a residence in the 2800 block of Colibri Court. Police spokeswoman Emily Fromelt said Ramos pointed a knife at the woman and threatened to kill her while destroying property in the home in a fit of rage.

Duncan Rose, a prosecutorial liaison for the Department of Child Services told the Court that Ramos consumed 24 beers over the course of a day when he assaulted the woman. “This case is particularly troubling your Honor,” Rose said.

Rose said Ramos pummeled the woman as she curled up on a bed in a fetal position while holding their baby. He said one blow struck the head of the boy whose face swelled up.

“Alcohol is clearly his problem,” said defense attorney Kenneth Beane.  He said Ramos wants to benefit from counseling and turn his life around.

“He’s embracing his ordeal as a wake up call,” Beane said.

Judge Lambert said any awakening should have occurred during Ramos’ dozen previous convictions, five of them involving violence.
