Havasu Lecture series continues

LAKE HAVASU CITY – The Lake Havasu Lecture Series at ASU is back this month. Dr. Doyle Wilson will be presenting Colorado River Basin Water Supply Connection. The ASU Community Outreach program has created the lecture series as a way to educate the community through informational lectures that are free to the public.

Dr. Wilson is locally known for bringing awareness to Lake Havasu about Colorado River concerns. Dr. Wilson has a masters degree from ASU and a PhD from Portland State University in environmental science and geology.

Later, he began a career as the Water Resources Coordinator with Lake Havasu City. Now retired, Dr. Wilson remains passionate about climate change. Over the years, the doctor has used microscopes used to study sediments.

If you’ve ever wondered what determines water movement, it’s the size, color, shape, and texture of sediments.  This happens when water filters below the ground’s surface but at different levels.  Many scientists like Dr. Wilson, have concluded that Colorado River streams have lowered to about 20% in comparison to the beginning of the 20th century.

Just in the last two decades, climate change along with rising temperatures have evaporated over 10 trillion gallons of water from the river basin.  Roughly 85-90 percent of Colorado River’s release derives from melting snowpack from the Rocky Mountains of Wyoming and Colorado.

In 2020, Lake Havasu Water Savers Group was formed.  The group consists of volunteers and the Lake Havasu Conservation Office. All for the sake of water maintenance, the citizens have an understanding on the emphasis that should be placed on saving the most valued resource.

Not only will Dr. Wilson discuss the ongoing shortage of water supplied to the Colorado River, you will also learn where the water of the river comes from and how the decrease of water is occurring.

The Lake Havasu Community Lecture Series will be taking place on Wednesday, September 27 from 6 to 7 p.m.  in the gymnasium of ASU at Lake Havasu City. Feel free to come for refreshments  served at 5:45 p.m.
