LHC council discusses court renovations

LAKE HAVASU CITY – Lake Havasu City council members are starting to think about design and construction of the fitness center purchased for renovation and use as a municipal court facility close to City Hall. No action was taken during the Oct. 27 council meeting, but there’s a consensus to move forward.

“You never want to let an asset sit,” Mayor Cal Sheehy said. He said he supports finding money to move toward design and remodel.

“I believe moving forward sooner rather than later is in the best interest of the city,” agreed Vice Mayor David Lane. He noted the city leases court space from the county and case save those payments once it has its own facility.

“If we don’t go know, we’ll never do it. Let’s do it all at once,” Lane said. The Vice Mayor explained one build out will represent cost savings over time rather than a phase by phase approach.

Lane said he thinks the second floor should be fully developed to provide more space. And Council member Donna McCoy expressed support for developing a new council chambers inside the court building to return to the police department its training room which is currently used for council meetings.

Possible design and construction options are expected to be discussed after two newly elected members join the council Nov. 24.
