Blaze near Lake Havasu closes highway

Highway 95 near Lake Havasu City was closed in both directions Sunday, March 31, when a brush fire roared along the edge  of Lake Havasu at Body Beach. The Lake Havasu Fire Department said personnel from multiple agencies assisted in the effort to contain the fire that was reported at 10:18 a.m.

The blaze chewed through 80 acres of dense salt cedar brush and other vegetation, fanned by blustery conditions. “The winds caused the fire to move rapidly along the shoreline to the area just north of the Havasu Riviera Project,” a news release stated.

Officials said the highway was closed between Mulberry Avenue and Acoma Boulevard during the early stage of the fire because smoke obscured visibility for motorists. No one was injured and the fire was brought under control by 3:00 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by BLM law enforcement.
