NEEDLES, Calif. – Some residents of nearby Needles, California were temporarily evacuated from their homes when a wildfire destroyed one home Saturday afternoon, June 22. The fire scorched dozens of acres in California and hopped the Colorado river to blacken 164 more acres in Mohave Valley.
The “Needles Fire” claimed a long-abandoned building on the Arizona side of the river. No injuries are reported with the fire contained at 206 acres in total.
Mohave Valley Fire Department Fire Marshal Donnie Gibson said the fire consumed highly combustive heavy river bottom fuel, including salt cedar and mesquite. Gibson said crews are monitoring the fire to protect against flare-ups.
“We’ve got a couple of properties that are of concern,” Gibson said. “They’re checking these areas and working suppression. The fire will be in patrol status the rest of this week.”
