MCC Community Education Division continues expansion of Health, Medical and CTE offerings

These courses are designed to ensure students hit the ground running upon entering the workforce in addition to giving them the skills to complete Do-It-Yourself projects.

MOHAVE COUNTY – Mohave Community College’s Community Education Division is pleased to announce an ever-increasing selection of health, medical, and Career and Technical Education classes. These courses are designed to ensure students hit the ground running upon entering the workforce in addition to giving them the skills to complete do-it-yourself projects.

Health and Medical

Instruction for the Assistant Living Caregiver course begins with lecture at 9 a.m. before moving to lab at 1 p.m. The course will see students develop basic caregiving skills and knowledge to perform safely and effectively as a caregiver in the assisted living or home setting. The class runs from Oct. 28 to Dec. 11.

*         Mondays and Wednesdays

*         Lecture from 9 a.m. – Noon

*        Lab from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.

The course culminates with a final exam, for which students will be expected to Identify the levels of care within as assisted living facility and care necessary for each level; Identify the legal and ethical issues, residents’ rights, mental health and social service needs; and Demonstrate basic care giving skills, basic restorative services, medication management and care of the cognitively impaired resident.

Additionally, students will be able to demonstrate maintenance of home environment and job management skills, as well as effective communication, ethical and legal behaviors, good grooming and dependability.

The College’s Community Education Division is also continuing those classes that reward students with a Community Health Worker certificate upon completion.

The five-week Community Health Worker II course provides an overview of Community Health Worker core competencies, allowing students to increase knowledge and use of data to drive evidence-based practices while supporting community members in their health care, social, housing and behavioral health needs. Completing Community Health Worker I is not a prerequisite to registering for Community Health Worker II. The class runs from Aug. 23 to Sept. 28.

The Introduction to Field Experience course involves preparing students for field experience through a hands-on approach in applying core competencies tailored to respective communities, and will address distinctions between health care and social service settings. The class runs from Oct. 18 to Nov. 16.

* Friday evening Zoom sessions

* 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. Saturdays on Lake Havasu Campus

Career and Technical Education

The Basic Auto Maintenance course is designed to equip students with the essential skills for maintaining a vehicle. Students will learn how to recognize tire-wear patterns for both safety and effective tire rotations. The comprehensive course will also delve into the intricacies of checking battery health and mastering the proper use of charging cables. Fluid checks, including oil, coolant and brake fluid, will also be covered. The class runs from Sept. 7 to Sept. 14.

*        8 – 10 a.m. Saturdays

The goal of Beginning Carpentry is to give students a basic understanding of woodworking for Do it Yourself projects around the home. The class will teach students proper tool usage and handling, types of wood for different projects, and types of fasteners. It will teach students how to understand and follow a design plan. As a main project, students will build a maple end table. Students will learn how to laminate the table top and cut Crown molding as well as different types of connection joints as well as how to attach and assemble the materials.

*         Oct. 21 to Nov. 13

*         Nov. 25 to Dec. 18

The Keeping It Cool HVAC Course is designed to teach students the basic fundamentals for maintaining the home’s heating and cooling systems. Students will learn about changing filters and cleaning coils, and how to keep the system running at peak operational levels.

Classes for Kids

Mohave Community College also has a number of classes designed for children on the horizon, especially on the Lake Havasu Campus. The Back to School for Kids program is set to begin with Children’s Ballet.
