MOHAVE COUNTY – In recognizing local public agency innovations and cutting-edge-solutions to enhance the nation’s transportation system, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has named Mohave County Public Works its 2020 Build a Better Mousetrap award recipient in the category of Smart Transformation Award. The award spotlights Public Works’ new and customized culvert inspection mobile application as a best practice solution that enhances asset management by improving field data capture, data analysis, and work automation. This software for smartphone or tablet use eliminates paperwork and allows inspectors to file complete reports concurrent to their inspection work.
Public Works planned, developed, and implemented its custom culvert inspection mobile application through existing staff and equipment. These resources collectively support the Department’s general service delivery. The software application incurred no outside cost and lends numerous positive impacts including increased inspection services speed and accuracy coupled with consistency in inspection performance across multiple staff. It punctuates Public Works delivery of services to best practice and meeting its mission to duly enhance the quality of life of those served.
Public Works pursued its culvert inspection mobile application to streamline staff inspection services for 994 maintained culverts across 2,095 County maintained road miles. The software application and system database maintains coordinate location, documents culvert characteristics, rates culvert condition, enables image capture, and timestamps culvert inspection occurrence for each structure in inventory.
