Anguis refuses to mask up during board meetings

MOHAVE COUNTY – Continuing debate over the merits of face cover during the COVID-19 pandemic turned a bit chippy during Monday’s Board of supervisors meeting. Supervisors circled back to another meandering discussion of county policy requiring non-exempt citizens to wear masks in county buildings and the board auditorium.

Board Chairman Jean Bishop noted her concern that Dist. 2 Supervisor Hildy Angius and Dist. 5 Supervisor Ron Gould commonly don’t wear masks while at the dais during meetings.

“Supervisor Angius I haven’t shared this before but I feel a little uncomfortable sitting in between you and Supervisor Gould not wearing a mask and I don’t have a choice and so that’s why I wear a mask to protect myself, my husband and the people that come to do business in the county auditorium,” Bishop said.

Angius shot back an answer and possible solution.

“Well that’s interesting because I’ve already had it and I have the antibodies,” Angius said. “But, I’ll tell you what. To make you feel better and more safe, I will do what Supervisor Johnson does for the last year and just not come to meetings and I’ll call in and everybody can feel healthy. Everyone can feel secure and healthy because I’m not sitting there without a mask. I’m not going to wear a mask for two, three, four hours. I’m just not.”

Angius and Department of Public Health Director Denise Burley had an exchange where they agreed conflicting conclusions about masks can be read in various papers and studies and that many experts take contrary positions. Burley said she would side with science and error on the side of caution.

“At this point we are choosing the science that we choose to use,” Angius said.

Supervisor Buster Johnson apparently referred to Angius and Gould when he noted the inconsistency problem resulting from them not wearing masks in the auditorium while citizens are required to do so. He said he always abides by the majority decision when he is in the minority of a board vote.

“I believe this board needs to honor our democracy,” Johnson said. “If we expect the public to follow board actions, we need to follow them as well.”

Johnson noted he has taken legal action in the past when in the minority of a board vote while feeling the majority decision was improper or illegal. Angius called his remark a threat.

Compliance with COVID-19 regulations was also discussed Monday. Deputy County Attorney Lenore Knudtson said the county continues its commitment to educate the public to comply rather than taking heavy handed action.

“I’m proud to say that sitting outside my office I have approximately 70 files that have resulted in inspections and not one of them has resulted in Mohave County closing the business down,” Knudtson said. She also said no business has been fined by the county for coronavirus compliance issues.

County Manager Sam Elters said more than 500 county employees have responded to a survey about their position on wearing masks while in county buildings. He said the response deadline was 5 p.m. Monday and that he would share the survey data once compiled.

  1. Good for her! I’m glad someone is standing up against these self righteous mask pushers!
They like to say “I’m wearing it because it’s for other people not for me” So, the mask can stop the virus from coming out of your mouth/nose, but it can’t stop it from going into your mouth or nose?? What logic!
