WestCare approved to receive $1 million of ARPA funds

MOHAVE COUNTY – District 2 Mohave County supervisor Hildy Angius has earned board approval to use coronavirus pandemic relief funds to help addicts recover and rehabilitate in Bullhead City. The county is receiving about $41.5million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds, and the board decided in April that each supervisor would take a lead role in determining how to spend a little more than $8million in each of the five county districts.

“It is not a secret that my passion is recovery for addicts and alcoholics and all who struggle with addiction, particularly women,” Angius said. She said more services are needed because there is a waiting list for admission to the three sober living facilities that currently operate in Bullhead City.

“WestCare, Arizona has identified a house in Bullhead City that would be ideal for this purpose,” Angius told board members, without disclosing the location. “It’s a very large house and the home would be for women only.”

Angius said it’s important for addicts to have clean environment living facilities to gain separation from people and patterns that have resulted in poor decision making in the past. She said overnight lodging provides the important component of stability for the addicted, and a pathway to work to return to productive lifestyles.

“We want help for those that want help,” she said. “The treatment centers are a great start and hopefully mean that everyone who wants a bed will have a bed.”

The board approved Angius’ motion to allocate up to $1 million to WestCare to purchase and renovate the residence and operate it as a sober living home. It’s only the first slice of the $41.5 million pie as the other supervisors have yet to bring their district spending wishes to the board for approval.
