Kingman Powerhouse Kiwanis hosts scholarship dinner to support local youth

KINGMAN – Saturday, March 7, The Kingman Powerhouse Kiwanis hosted its scholarship dinner at the Club for Youth from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. This St. Patrick’s Day Celebration helped to raise money to support scholarships for graduating seniors at $20 a ticket, along with a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle.

The 2020 Scholarship dinner was sponsored by Unisource Energy Services, Anderson Auto Group, Baker Chevron, Kingman Regional Medical Center, The Law office of Deborah A. Liverence, Deana Nelson- State Farm, 66 Auto Sales, TNC Insurance, Kermit’s Transmission, JM Eagle, Living Waters Hospice, ReMax Preferred, Matt Ladendecker-Edward Jones, Foothills Bank, and Darin Edwards-Farmers Insurance.

“Kingman Powerhouse Kiwanis has been doing scholarships for over 20 years. In 2018, we launched a school dinner as our annual fundraiser. With that, in 2018 and 2019, we raised $40,000 approximately. Every year, we partner with both Mohave Community College (MCC) and Kingman graduates to award scholarships. For MCC, the first year we just gave them a check for scholarships. For this year, we purchased welding kits, because they go to the trade schools but there are kits they have to buy that aren’t covered by financial aid. This year, we were able to buy the welding kits. This year we are buying 40 kits at the value of $175 per kit. A total of $7,000 we are investing into MCC and we gave an additional $7,000 to graduating high school seniors,” says Bill Ward.

The scholarship focus is on trades with community colleges as well as University education. First generation students seeking post secondary education are encouraged to apply. The scholarship deadline is April 29. No GPA required. High school seniors can contact school’s counselor in charge of scholarships for application or follow Kingman Powerhouse on Facebook and request an application be emailed.

The primary emphasis of this organization is service to children of all ages. In addition to the Kingman Powerhouse Kiwanis Scholarship, the organization does solicitations for clothing in the fall for its Clothe the Kids event. This event takes 150 children, ages K-5th grade, shopping at Walmart for $100 worth of clothing. The organization raises a minimum of $20,000 and it goes not only to the Clothes the Kids event but also to support Salvation Army, CAP, and the local schools for shirts, shoes and clothing.
