MOHAVE COUNTY – National firearms and immigration issues drew critical comment during Monday’s Mohave County board of supervisors meeting in Kingman. Dist. 5 Supervisor Ron Gould expressed concern about possible 2nd Amendment infringement by the administration of President Joe Biden.
Gould noted Monday was Patriot’s Day and he detailed how the people revolted when the British Army tried to seize weapons the militia hid 246 years ago.
“Tyrants always want to disarm the citizens. The King did it. The guy in the White House wants to do it. And I want to warn him that many of us descended from the 3% that would not be ruled,” Gould said. “So, he (Biden) might want to tread lightly upon us. I don’t want to see that happen, but I don’t think that I’m going to let it happen and many others won’t’ either.”
Sheriff Doug Schuster said he appreciated Gould connecting history to federal weapons policy.
“I think it’s important that we remain diligent in letting our future generations know where we came from and it’s kind of a shame to me what’s going on in our country and it just seems to be getting worse daily,” Schuster said.
The board approved a resolution offered by District 1 Supervisor Travis Lingenfelter expressing concern that Biden immigration policy reform has resulted in crisis along the U.S. border with Mexico.
“The Biden administration has dropped the ball so far in keeping up with the influx of illegal immigrants in 2021,” Lingenfelter said. He said federal officers have encountered 171,000 illegal immigrants last month, as well as a record number of unaccompanied children.
Schuster said problems caused by illegal immigration are not isolated to the border and spread north from there.
“We are seeing a mass influx of the Mexican cartels pushing their poison across that border,” the sheriff said. “The trafficking has never been this high and what’s horrible to me is that they’re using children to do this. They’re posing as parents at the border to simply try to get across.”
Schuster told board members that the federal government is no longer picking up migrants to return them to Mexico. He said border and other communities have been releasing them instead.
Gould said many migrants come to America to exploit welfare benefits.
“The President has essentially invited these people to come to our country to walk through, claim political asylum and be released in the interior of the country. There’s no other country in the world that behaves like this. This is just ridiculous. You can’t have open borders in a welfare state,” Gould said.
“The border needs to go back to the `wait in Mexico program’ where if you want political asylum do it from home folks. Don’t show up on our doorstep and claim political asylum because I guarantee you these folks are not politically persecuted. The majority of them know the scam and they want to get into the country.”
