KINGMAN – The City of Kingman Dross Project at the Airport Industrial Park was recently recognized with an Engineering Excellence Award by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Arizona during the 2024 Engineering Excellence Awards Breakfast in Phoenix. Engineering company, Haley and Aldrich, Inc. received the Grand Award for this project.
The Kingman Dross Project involved the removal of over 40,000 cubic yards of contaminated aluminum dross, a byproduct left from recycling over 5,000 surplus military aircrafts after World War II. Since acquiring the airport, the City of Kingman has consistently called for federal action to address cleanup of the waste left behind in the late 1940s. The dross posed serious environmental and safety concerns, making the cleanup a priority.
Haley & Aldrich began securing funding and approvals for this complex environmental project nearly a decade ago, working closely with the City of Kingman and external legal counsel. In early 2023, their efforts paid off when the U.S. Department of Justice agreed to compensate Kingman $52.5 million to remediate the dross site. Their innovative approach used during cleanup, which used rail transportation instead of traditional trucking, minimized noise, air pollution, and road wear. The project was successfully completed in the summer of 2024, ahead of schedule and under budget, showcasing the firm’s expertise and dedication.
