KINGMAN – A local judge has removed himself from the Brady Shuffler case, bringing indefinite sentencing delay for a Kingman community that had been focused on criminal chapter closure. Mohave County Superior Court Judge Derek Carlisle’s case recusal occurred during a March 14 emergency hearing at the Law and Justice Center in Kingman.

Carlisle’s exit brings postponement of the highly anticipated prison sentencing hearing that had been scheduled for Monday, March 18. Judge Carlisle said he discovered possible conflicts while reading material submitted in advance of the sentencing proceeding for Brady Shuffler, 17.

“The Court advises Counsel that based on some of the letters in the mitigation packet; this Court is recusing itself from this matter to avoid the appearance of impropriety,” Judge Carlisle’s minute order stated. Carlisle did not indicate what concerned him about the mitigation letters in open Court, though he provided specifics to attorneys in Chambers.

A number of other local judges previously declared various case conflicts given the involvements of multiple families in the greater Kingman community. Carlisle said it might be difficult to find a local judge that doesn’t have case conflicts before he turned to Phoenix for help.

Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Suzanne Nicholls has agreed to finish the Shuffler case.

The Kingman teen faces a punishment range between three and 18 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter and aggravated assault charges for the April, 13, 2023 traffic accident that claimed the lives of two fellow Lee Williams High School student athletes and the serious injuries of two others.

Shuffler also sustained serious injuries when the Dodge Charger he drove in excess of 100 mph rolled in the 3500 block of Louise Avenue.

Judge Nicholls scheduled a March 21 status hearing to address any matters that might be necessary following the change of judge maneuver. Establishing a sentencing hearing date is the primary focus.

KINGMAN – The hunt isn’t just about finding eggs; it’s a time for laughter, fun, and creating wonderful memories. Families and friends can enjoy the festivities together and cheering on the little ones. There’s a golden egg hidden in strategic locations at our parks, promising even more exciting prizes to those lucky enough to find them! The eggs will be cleverly hidden beneath bushes, behind trees, and tucked away in secret spots. Some are out in the open, while others might require a keen eye to discover. As everyone gathers their eggs, they can exchange them for delightful treats and surprises at Parks & Recreation office located at 3333 Harrison St. The only way to participate is to follow Parks & Rec on Facebook and look for clues in the designated week. All eggs must be turned in by April 2. The egg hunt runs now through March 31, and is free for all ages. Clues will be announced on the City of Kingman, Parks Facebook page

KINGMAN – Attorneys requested opposite ends of the spectrum of punishment for a sex offender and a local judge balked at a sentencing decision for lack of input from the victim or her family in the case. Mohave County Superior Court Judge Lee Jantzen declined to impose sentence during a Dec. 4 hearing, and he continued the matter until the new year.

The delay arises in the case against Silvestre Gonzalez who had sex with a 14-year-old girl in Ft. Mohave in March. The 30-year-old defendant pleaded guilty in early Nov. to a charge reduced to attempted sexual conduct with a minor in a deal allowing the Court to order as little as probation, or up to as many as 15 years in prison.

Defense attorney Elana Sears argued strenuously for leniency, citing support among family and friends. She said Gonzalez had never before been in trouble, lacked any criminal history and that his transgression was an aberration that would not be repeated.

“This was a horrible ‘one-off’ for him, a horrible mistake. He’s never going to be in this situation again,” Sears said. “He is coming forward and taking responsibility.”

Gonzalez offered apology to the victim and her family. “I feel great remorse for what I’ve done.”

Prosecutor Bob Moon questioned whether Gonzalez is remorseful for his conduct or for the prospect of possibly going to prison for roughly half as long as he’s been alive.

“This is the case where if you’re the parents of the daughter, it makes your blood boil,” Moon said. Authorities have said that a social media courtship of sorts led to Gonzalez having sex with the just-turned-14 girl outside her home in his parked vehicle.

“She thought she was in love. She thought they were going to be together forever. This was a predatory crime,” Moon said, noting the victim is traumatized. “She’s in a bad place now She is self-harming. She can’t believe she was duped.”

Sears said this was the first time she heard that the victim was devastated.

Moon said the victim’s father has prevented her participation in legal proceedings to protect her from further drama and trauma.

Judge Jantzen said he needs to know more to impose sentence responsibly. “I need to hear from the victim before I make a decision.”

Sentencing was rescheduled Jan. 19.

BULLHEAD CITY – A drug-induced naked crime spree that began and ended at the Family Dollar in Bullhead City results in a five-year prison term for John Aguilar-Gomez, 32. The sentenced imposed Dec. 19 by Mohave County Superior Court Judge Derek Carlisle was mandated in a plea agreement convicting the Bullhead City man of aggravated assault, indecent exposure and criminal trespassing.

Bullhead City police department spokeswoman Emily Fromelt said that officers responded at about 9:00 p.m. on Aug. 22 to a report that a fully naked man had entered the business in the 1000 block of Hancock Rd. She said employees told the suspect to leave the store and that arriving officers were notified of a burglary in progress at a nearby home in the 1600 block of Lakeside Drive.

Fromelt said a woman living there told officers that the birthday suit burglar was inside their home when she and her kids returned from an outing. Officers were once again diverted to another residence in the 1000 block of Baseline that Aguilar-Gomez reportedly burgled before using a flashlight to strike the male resident who confronted him.

Fromelt said Aguilar-Gomez crossed the back yard of another home in the 1000 block of Zircon Avenue as the ordeal continued at 9:53 p.m. Shortly thereafter, the suspect was apprehended after he ran back into the same Family Dollar where he was fully exposed before five children 6-11 years of age.

Aguilar-Gomez told Judge Carlisle at his Nov. change of plea hearing that drugs blurred his incident memory. “I was on drugs, so I don’t recall,” he told the Court.

KINGMAN – A Golden Valley man who admits he brutally abused his girlfriend’s 14-month-old son has been given a 10-year prison term. The punishment that Mohave County Superior Court Judge Lee Jantzen ordered Monday for Matthew Brown, 25, was the most prison time possible under terms of a previously entered plea agreement.

Brown pleaded guilty to two charges reduced to attempted child abuse for harming the toddler in April, 2022. A sexual conduct with a minor count and another abuse charge are dismissed in the deal.

That the victim was treated for rectal bleeding along with other physical abuse contributed to the original sex offense charging decision. Public Defender Paul Amann said Brown adamantly denies that any sexual activity occurred and that his client regrets harming the toddler, who recovered about three months after the violence, according to his grandfather.

Deputy Mohave County Attorney Amanda Claerhout said Brown told law enforcement officers that he “womped” the victim for incessant crying. “He had bruises all over his face, all over his body, in various stages of healing,” she said.

“I am remorseful for that,” Brown avowed to the Court.

In addition to rectal bleeding, Claerhout said the victim suffered deep purple bruising in his genital area and that the defendant admitted punching the baby very hard there 10 times. “He clearly has anger management issues,” the prosecutor said.

Judge Jantzen made it clear that his punishment reflected the violent activity to which the defendant admitted, but that lifetime probation was not appropriate since he is not convicted of a sex offense. Jantzen ordered that Brown serve 10 years probation following prison.

Born June 19, 1939

Graduated from life October 21, 2023

Bill lived in the Kingman area for about 15 years. Bill moved from New York City with his parents Herman F. and Wilma C. Huldack to the San Marcos California area when he was about 6 years old and lived there until he moved to Arizona. Bill was ‘unique’ and ‘one-of-a-kind’ in his life activities and collections. Bill developed an interest in cars, hats, and World War II artifacts and memorabilia. A person never knew which bowler, cowboy or top hat he would wear for the day. He also had a variety of holsters that he liked to wear to go to town. Bill also like to collect elephants, models airplanes and ships, and anything that tickled his fancy.

Bill was a mechanic which came from his high school love of cars especially his ’32 Ford Coupe, his 1954 Corvette and his dragster. Bill loved to build out VW beetle engines. He knew and could talk for hours about the repair and mechanics of car engines. One of his favorites along with his VW beetles was the VW bus conversion that took him all the way to his favorite spot in the Bay of Los Angeles, Baja Mexico. There he enjoyed living on the beach, catching fish, drinking beer and enjoying time with friends. Bill would work to live. He worked as a mechanic only enough of the year in order to spend weeks or months in Mexico living life on the beach and sailing.

Bill loved the desert life. He enjoyed the freedom, fresh air and animals that live here. However, Bill enjoyed the Golden Corral buffet and visiting some of the gun and curio shops in Kingman to see the new things in the shops and talk with his friends. Sometimes accompanied by his Wiley Coyote stuffed life-size animal. He was also friends with everyone’s dogs…he would take treats to them and became known to some as the ‘Cookie Man.’

Bill was an only child and he retired from mechanic work to care for his aging parents until they passed away in the Escondido area. Bill then chose the desert life and lived to the beat of his own drum. He will be missed by his friends and adopted family for his unique character and lively stories. As with any individual passing from this life, there will be a missing of his presence but the memories he created will remain alive.
