Varsity volleyball chosen for AIA Sportsmanship Award

KINGMAN – Kingman Unified School District #20 is proud of the Kingman High School girls’ Varsity Volleyball team. They were selected as this year’s recipient of the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) 3A Conference Sportsmanship Award. This award is handed out annually in each conference to the team that exhibits the highest level of sportsmanship, as voted on by the officials.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association recognizes outstanding Arizona high school students, teachers, coaches, officials, administrators and schools for outstanding achievements, on and off the field, and exemplifying trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.

Student Adelina Starr, a junior and varsity team player at Kingman High School stated “The best part about being a part of this team is that we all work as a family, and not for our individual selves. Being a part of this team, especially in high school, creates memories throughout the connections you make.”

There are over 40 ‘3A Teams’ in competition and Kingman High School girls Varsity Volleyball team was selected from all of them. Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Kingman High School, John Venenga explained, “Our coaches, players, and fans were rated 18 times over the season on a scale of 1 to 5 and that is how the award was determined. We are very excited to win this award and we are very proud of our volleyball program.” The last time Kingman High School was selected for the AIA Sportsmanship Award was in 2008 to the school’s football team.
Sophomore and varsity player Aubrey Brown chimed in saying, “The team is like my family and we are all bonded. The girls are like your sisters. My favorite part is being with my team when we win.”
The team is led by Head Coach, Brianna Cathers and Assistant Coach, Tricia Cathers. Coach Brianna Cathers said, “The girls have come so far in the season. At the end of the season they worked really hard in making this a team effort and fought everyday to get where they are and I am excited to see what next season brings.”
