A Lake Havasu City man who stabbed his own father is going to the Arizona Department of Corrections after entering a plea agreement in Kingman on Wednesday, May 22. Markos Martinez, 22, pleaded guilty to two aggravated assault charges and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Officers responding to an August, 2018 report of a stabbing at a home in the 3600 block of Swordfish Drive encountered the victim outside his house, clutching his left wrist which was bleeding. A police report indicates they were planning to take a trip to Mexico, but that Martinez kicked in his father’s bedroom door and threatened to kill him with a knife, making bizarre religious references during the encounter.

“God is telling me to do this to you. You better bow and listen and get on your knees or I’m going to kill you,” Martinez told his dad, according to the police report. “God sent me to do this. You better apologize to my mom.”

Defense attorney Brad Rideout said the victim suffered a stab wound to his hand while trying to block his son’s stabbing attempts. He said there are indications that Martinez was under the influence of drugs and a usable quantity of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia was found in his client’s bedroom.

Rideout said Martinez tried to retreat within the home when police arrived before officers rushed him. Prosecutor Jaimye Ashley said Martinez punched one officer while unsuccessfully resisting arrest.

Terms of the deal require Mohave County Superior Court Judge Rick Lambert to order a ten-year prison term at a July 3 sentencing hearing.
