BULLHEAD CITY – Mohave Electric Cooperative (MEC) awarded eighteen $200 classroom grants to educators for financial assistance in making classroom learning more engaging.

Thirty-two applications were received for the eighteen available grants. A team at MEC evaluated the projects submitted by educators basing their grading on creativity, following application instructions, classroom integration, as well as benefits and financial need to students. Classroom Grants are funded by assigned capital credits at no cost to the cooperative or its members.

“Every year teachers throughout the MEC service area turn in creative project ideas and we look forward to the new ways educators will implement these programs into the classroom,” said Heather Foreman, public affairs coordinator, “It’s never an easy process, with so many excellent projects, making it difficult to choose the 18 winners.”

Project ideas ranged from science, reading, math, wood working, construction, social studies, to music and organization. The eighteen selected educators represent nine schools where their various K-12 programs will be implemented. The schools are Bullhead Middle School, Camp Mohave Elementary School, Desert Star Academy, Desert Valley School, Fort Mojave Elementary School, Mohave Accelerated Learning Center, Sunrise Elementary School, Topock Elementary School, and Young Scholars Academy.

Congratulations to educators: Amber Gaudry, Tamsin Gardetto, Nicole Jarman, Samantha Penfold, Jennifer Turner, Juvicel De Guzman, Judy Chesla, Mike Jackson, Laci Ortiz, Aubry Sterk, Jorden Ostrowski, Brianna Guerrero, Valari Delgadillo, Ralph Green, Arlene Barnette, Dione DeBord, Maria Cid, and Marie Christine Villegas.

Checks were awarded at the luncheon May 2, 2024.

MOHAVE COUNTY – Governor Katie Hobbs in partnership with Arizona’s 10 public community college districts has created the Arizona Community College Workforce Scholarship program to help Arizonans earn a credential, degree or build advanced skills that lead to jobs in high-wage, high-growth occupations.

“The Arizona Community College Workforce Scholarship program is a terrific step toward equipping our regional workforce with the necessary skills to thrive in the economy today and into the future,” said Dr. Stacy Klippenstein, President of Mohave County Community College.

The scholarship is designed to provide Arizona students with the incentive to pursue a higher education certificate, degree, credential or license resulting in a skilled workforce equipped to meet the demands of the state’s economy.

Governor Hobbs has allocated $4.5M in federal funding to get the program started, with future public or private funding to help to ensure the future of the program.

The Community College Workforce Scholarship program will provide financial support to students for the upcoming summer and fall semesters. It is projected that 9,000-10,000 Arizona students, including working adults, will be able to upskill or reskill. Through these scholarships, the state will move closer to reaching its Achieve60AZ education attainment goal.

Scholarships are targeted to the following high-wage, high-growth sectors with each community college focusing on regional industries in the communities they serve.

* Advanced manufacturing, including semiconductors

* Health Care

* IT/cyber security/broadband/data analytics

* Education and early education

* Construction/trades/HVAC

* Aerospace/defense

* Veterinary technology

* Dental hygienists and dental assistants

* Tractor trailer driving

* Insurance appraisers

* Paralegal and legal assistants

Students participating in the Workforce Scholarship program are required to meet the following criteria:

* Have a 2.0 GPA or better.

* Meet with their academic advisor to review their academic plan and progress.

* Be eligible for in-state status for tuition purposes as defined by Arizona Law and the College.

* Be enrolled in or enroll in, a degree, certificate or credential program in one or more of the above high growth/high wage program areas.

MCC is currently accepting students for Summer and Fall semesters.  New and Returning students should get started by visiting the College Admissions webpage at www.Mohave.edu/Admission. Once a person fills out the application, an MCC representative will contact you to assist with the enrollment process, and provide more information on applying for tuition assistance. Current students should contact the MCC Office of Financial Aid and/or their advisors for more information on scholarship opportunities.

LAKE HAVASU CITY – Last week, Sunstone Real Estate Group partnered up with Mohave Shred for the company’s seventh annual Shred Hunger event. The charitable event took place on Thursday, May 2 right in front of the Sunstone’s business site on McCulloch Blvd.

The family of realtors has been in business for ten years and specializes in vacation homes, luxury homes, RV garage homes and much more. The realtor team along with Mohave Shred, collaborated together that day in order to give back to the community in a major way.

Mohave Shred is known for their affordable prices with shredding personal documents for residents of the county. People were allowed to bring up to ten boxes of private documents for shredding for a donation of two canned foods or nonperishable items.

Their goal was an amazing success, as they received three hundred and seventy three pounds of donated canned goods. All donations went to Havasu Community Health Foundation’s food bank so that they can continue to serve those in need in  Lake Havasu.

KINGMAN – The suspect in a near two-year-old double homicide outside Kingman faces a May 16 initial court appearance before Judge Doug Camacho at the Mohave County Law and Justice Center.

Daniel Matthew Avila, 26, El Mirage, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the June 27, 2022 shooting deaths of Retta Atkins, 73, and her husband Darren VanHouten, 50. Authorities allege a video surveillance system reveals Avila outside before breaking in and shooting the couple to death in their home in the 9200 block of Dilligaf Road.

Avila previously pleaded guilty in a Tempe burglary case and was given a 2.5-year prison sentence. He was recently extradited back to Kingman to stand trial in Mohave County.

Deputy Mohave County Attorney Jacob Cote is the prosecutor assigned to the case. Cote said Avila will be assigned legal counsel after the initial court appearance if he does not secure private counsel himself.
