The 2022-2023 Mohave High School basketball season has started, and the Thunderbirds are off to a great start. They won their first game of the season by a wide margin and with little difficulty. Their dominant start never ended and would be the consistent story of the game. Early offensive success would give them the early lead and instant momentum. The first quarter would end with the score being 18 to six.
The second quarter began with the same story. The offense succeeded through the defense. Defense led to transition offensive points, which was even elaborated by head coach John Drexler. “Our defense leads a lot to our offense…our defense won out. You start getting easier buckets on the fastbreak, off of layups and putbacks,” said Drexler. The second quarter was the ultimate stomp on the Buffaloes. From here the Tempe head coach had already received a technical foul and the fouls were being accumulated from the Tempe side. The Thunderbirds held a lead of 10 going into the second half and an attempt of revival never occurred.
The second half was much of the same as the scoring was led by number 5, Kingzten Bristol. His three-point scoring was the main contribution to the Thunderbirds as he scored three three pointers in the fourth quarter. Before leading the Thunderbirds in second half scoring, he only scored two points in the first half.
The second half brought much excitement to the Mohave Thunderbirds as the Tempe head coach received two technical fouls and a rejection from the game. Following this event, Kingzten performed a fastbreak dunk that brought the crowd to their feet. After this, every player was given an opportunity to play as the game was unreachable. The final score ended with the Thunderbirds winning 71 to 39.
The first of the season is a great way to begin a season and will intimidate future opponents with their wide margin of victory. Momentum is taken immediately and a continuation of this momentum is in their intentions, but an upcoming opponent in California team, Shadow Hills, will bring question to their continuous success.
